Vintage Mailbox and a Thank You

Hello ladies...I hope all of y'all (yes...I'm a true southern gal) are having a wonderful time enjoying all this beautiful Spring weather...I know I am. First, I would like to thank everyone for all the "cool" ideas for my "wall basket"...I decided to go with Brenda's (Ladybug Dreams) idea...she said to put some cookbooks and kitchen utensils in it and I just had to give this idea a try...I LOVE it! I have lots of cookbooks...some vintage and some new...I decided to use two books that I had a part in putting together. The first book is a book that Mr.CC's real estate office put together for the American Cancer Society...it's called "SOUTHERN YUMMIES" and yes...it has lots and lots of "SOUTHERN YUMMIES" recipes! The second book is a book that the young girls and their mothers put together for "Mobile's Azalea Trail Court". This book was put together the year that my youngest daughter was a trail maid...if you want to learn more about what is "Mobile's Azalea Trail Court"...click HERE. I have several vintage kitchen utensils...some came from my MIL and some I picked up years ago when I had my antique shop...most of them have red handles, but I do have a couple of green handle ones too. I decided to add a cute "S" kitchen hand towel and there it was...all complete and it didn't cost Mr.CC a dime! I really try to make him HAPPY:)

The next thing I want to talk to you about is this FREE vintage mailbox that Mr.CC came home with...I'm not sure what I should do with it...please...HELP!!!! I think it's a keeper...loaded with character. Maybe I should hang it on my fence and plant some flowers in it...kinda like that idea, but I need more ideas and I know were to go for some great ones...ask my dear friends in blogland! I truly appreciate all you have to offer...thank you!

I wouldn't necessarily put anything in it at all. Just use it as is in the kitchen or bath to hang towels on or even by the back door for the dog leash. Can't remember if you have a dog! But then you could put dog treats in it if you do!

Linda.. If the mailbox is made of wood, I'd cut a hole jn the lift up piece..and turn int into a bird hose/nesting box..
Of course I would not hang it on the fence, but up high on the porch or under the eave..
Hugs.. Loui♥

hi linda! i actually have an old mailbox like that that we hung inside by our front door. so when i get the mail, i sort through and pull out what i need, then place the rest in there for my husband. that way, we never lose important mail or bills, because we know where to find it!

That is adorable, I love that idea, did not even see that one...GOOD ONE!~

I love how your basket turned out. Very cute. The mailbox would look adorable with flowers in it.

I was going to suggest the very same thing that Loui said. I prefer the top down on the mailbox -- it keeps its integrity in that manner and you can easily tell what it is. I'm afraid that the flowers might overpower it as they grow and you wouldn't be able to see it. You've got that magic touch though...I'm sure whatever you do will work beautifully!

Hmmm... I am liking what Jan says - perhaps you rig it on the inside with a topsy turvey planter so the plant comes out the bottom! That would be so unique! Perhaps something leggy like a mini petunia!

I LOVE that mailbox!!!

I love it filled like that and love that mailbox. My comments are not publishing. I hope yours are.

Linda, The vintage mailbox is wonderful! You could use it in a bathroom and roll a towel up and place on the hooks. Keep shampoo, soap ect inside. It would also be cute in your kitchen to keep mail in.

It is a sweet shape. I'd really have to think hard about it. I'd probably use it indoors to stash something wonderful in-maybe in the bathroom with a hand towel rolled up in the bottom...Sherry

I love your basket for your pantry door. I need something for my pantry door and this would be perfect as I have so many of the same items as you! I love the mailbox!

Hi Linda, I love what your did with your basket and your mail box is adorable, maybe put a candle in it? Anyway, I never get up to Santa Monica these days, it's about an hour north of me on the freeway. But it's a beautiful place and I bet if you check a local phone book, you'll find a ton of antique dealers. I hope you have a great time! Mary :O)

They both look great to me. I could see using the mailbox in any room or just changing the decor each month or season.

Love how the basket turned out! I really like the mailbox but have no idea what to do with it except flowers would look great planted in it!!

Hum it is lovely, but my mailbox is at the road, and sure would not work for me, it would hang on your house, if you get mail that way, or perhaps use it as a decoration on your house, if you get your mail like mine, add a couple flowers around it and it would look great. Hugs Barbara from

I love how you decorated the basket. It turned out great. That vintage mailbox looks perfect as it is. We have been having some GORGEOUS weather.♥

Hi Linda!

The basket looks so cute! The vintage mailbox is just awesome!

Hi Linda! LUV that mailbox!! I agree with Cassie and Anita. I wouldn't do much with it. Just the color and texture and shape of it is enough beauty and statement in itself!

I have been very busy this week and just saw your note on my blog. Thanks for sweetly adding that I suggested the basket idea! It looks great. I have a lot of cookbooks and have some of the smaller ones in baskets but I do not have one like this. HUmmm...Maybe..Love the mailbox. I don't have another idea for it everyone else listed anything I would do with it. I cannot wait to see what you use it for. As a planter outside sounds great. It's that time of year that I get all kinds of ideas to stick flower in. I am trying to talk my hubs out of an old tool box that he got at a auction. He only wanted what was in it so I do not see why I cannot swipe it for my use. lol Have a good job.

I really like what you did with your basket. Looks very sweet. I like the way you tied the wisk onto the cookbook.

As for the mailbox, I like it where it is. Maybe fill it with flowers. Maybe a bird's nest with a bird.

i like it just the way it is! you could hang it and use it to hold keys, or aprons in the kitchen. i don't think you can go wrong whatever you decide.

Hi Linda, I have the same exact mailbox, I got it a few years ago at a car swap meet. It hangs in our kitchen and I put receipts in it. Tracy

Your basket looks lovely! I would keep the mailbox inside and put some old magazines in it or something. I'd be afraid to plant it but that's just me and my brown thumb:)

The basket turned out lovely!

My roommates and I used to have a vintage mailbox hanging in our house, we would leave special "mail" for each other. Sometimes we left thank you notes, messages, and goodies for each other. Nothing like finding a Snickers bar unexpectedly. Our friends got in on the fun and left things for us also. The best was the engagement ring that was left for one of my roomies to find.

What a fun mailbox! I love it. I think I would paint your last intial on the door and then use the hooks on the bottom to hold some small hanging plants!

Amanda @ Serenity Now said...

I love the mailbox. I'll second Kelli...add your monogram in black to the front. Maybe it could go in your bathroom, and you could use the hooks to lay a small hand towel (rolled up) across??

Thank you so much for linking up to my party! I hope you have a fun time visiting around. :)

I think it would be really cute hanging on the fence with some plants, but I also think it would be cute hanging by your front door and you could hang a welcome sign from the bottom! Good luck!

MeenyMoe said...

I'd turn it into the base for a lamp! I can totally see it as a lamp. Remove the hooks on the bottom and either leave as is or add some wood to the bottom to give it more wobble-proof stability. You could even make a mini flower arrangement coming up and out of the top around the pole of the lamp. Can you visualize this? I know I sure can!! Very pretty! - Karen

Ann said...

I think that is one neat mailbox...great score!! As to what to do with it, why not put it in your kitchen or office area with mail that you want to eventually look at, process, or shred.
Just my thoughts,

I love your wall basket filled with all your treasures! I have a similar basket that I had put away a few years ago. I'm thinking I will have to bring it back out and fill it with lovely things too!

That basket is awesome!!! It looks so cute!

And that vintage mailbox is just amazing! I think I would leave it all chippy and old looking but hang it on a wall in my kitchen and have it as a place where everyone in the family leaves each other sweet notes. Then once a week we could sit down as a family and read all of the nice things everyone has to say about each other -- or little acts of kindness.

Love it!

XOXO

I love this mailbox.....they are not easy to come by my friend...I always look for them, but never find anything as nice as this....I'd leave it as is...maybe just add a little something to it for decor. Have a great VTT!

Postcardy said...

Flowers would look nice, but hanging it on a fence with flowers would probably make it rust out too fast.

Tara Beaulieu said...

I really like your mailbox and while I do agree with many others here that it is perfect the way it is, if you really want to try doing something different with it- could you remove the front panel and use it to put an outdoor candle in and hang it on your fence in a patio area? I also liked the suggestion of making it a birdhouse. :) Can't wait to see what you decide on. Happy VTT and thanks for sharing!

I really love the basket! and it would look prety hanging at white picket fences with some flowers on it.. or get it hang at your front door.. looks pretty too! Happy VTT.

Lovely mailbox! I would hang it in the hall and keep gloves and mittens in it, and use the hooks for shopping bags or umbrellas.

You could touch it up a little, find a place in your house and put bills to pay or things to follow up on in it. I have to do this, so I will not forget to handle things. There are lots of possibilities.

Your basket turned out beautifully. And that vintage mailbox...wow! I would love to have one just like it. I have a vintage one for my mudroom that I put outgoing mail in.

I'm visiting from the Coloradolady. Please come by my cottage for a visit and take a peek at the three linky parties I'm starting up the first week of June.

Have a great Memorial weekend!
