Nifty Thrifty Tuesdays No.17 and a COASTAL GIVEAWAY

A FREE beach concert and a COASTAL GIVEAWAY...soooooo NIFTY THRIFTY! I know this is not my typical NIFTY THRIFTY TUESDAYS post but as a local here on the ALABAMA GULF COAST...this is what my life is like at this time. I love living here on the gulf coast...I guess I should...I have lived here my entire life! Check out this awesome FREE concert!

Jimmy Buffett announced a free concert on July 1, 2010 in Gulf Shores, Alabama to promote awareness and tourism in the Gulf area.

Special guests will include Sonny Landreth, Zac Brown Band, Kenny Chesney, Jesse Winchester and Allen Toussaint. A special souvenir tee shirt will also be designed for the concert and sold onlne and at the show. More info coming soon!

What AWESOME news for all of us here on the ALABAMA GULF COAST...we sure needed some! I'm here at my beach condo this weekend and our beach is CLEAN and the water is crystal clear...I almost cried when I saw how much better it looks today...prayers are answered. I know our problems are not over, but it does feel really great to see our beach look like it did before BP made this mess! Please tell your friends...neighbors...co-workers...family and everybody you know that the best way they can help us here, is to come down for a visit in the near future.

Well onto the FREE concert...WOW...I'm still pinching myself...just can't believe all these people want to help us here on the gulf coast. I'm not so surprise that Jimmy Buffet is doing this...if you didn't know...Jimmy grew up in Mobile (my hometown...located on the Alabama coast) and get this...he went to high school with Mr.CC! Jimmy and his sister Lucy both went to school with him...Mr.CC didn't know Jimmy, but he does know Lucy (they went on double dates back then). This is an awesome line up...sooooo many wonderful musicians! THANK YOU...THANK YOU...THANK YOU!!!! All of these pics were taken yesterday 6/19/10 on West Beach in Gulf Shores, Alabama!

Now let's get down to this COASTAL GIVEAWAY! I'm a huge fan of the magazine "COASTAL LIVING" and I thought I would give one LUCKY follower a ONE YEAR SUBSCRIPTION...if you WIN...I'm sure you will fall in love with it too! The GIVEAWAY will end on Wednesday July 6!

I have been to New Orleans & to Florida, but I never made it down to the gulf.

  19. Hi Linda. I've been a follower and count me in. I've posted the Gulf picture on my sidebar.

How do I feel about the spill? Just sick in my heart. Watching all that muck gushing into the water breaks my heart. I think of all the wildlife that we'll never see that are killed by it. I think of those poor men who were killed in the explosion. I also think of how the best seafood that I've ever eaten was on the Gulf. I'm so glad to see that your waters are being kept clean and sparkling. I'm praying hard.

Having grown up on the MS Gulf Coast I can so appreciate those pictures, and what it means to have people care about the area. I think it's awesome that these great musicians are putting on a free concert. Jimmy Buffet and Kenny Chesney are two of my favs...seen them both on more than one occasion!

  26. Linda it's so wonderful to hear that these talented musicians want to give back to your beautiful community! I've been saddened by the lack of response to the gulf disaster that seems to normally follow a disaster such as the oil spill. It seems like many people have just overlooked it, so it's wonderful that Jimmy and the rest of the musicians on the bill with him will be giving back!

And that's so cool that Mr. CC went to school with the Buffet family!

    Kat :)

P.S. I already subscribe to Coastal Living so I'll let some other lucky person win your great giveaway!

  30. Hey Linda,
Thanks for visiting and leaving such sweet comments.

I'm a follower and have written a post on your give~away and on Jimmy Buffet's concert. I linked back to this post and attached the picture.

I live close to Galveston, so we haven't had any oil. However, we've been watching the news ever since the accident. I can't decide if BP is "really" trying to stop the leaking or not. I've heard so many comments that people are trying to stop things but have to get their ideas and support cleared through BP and that takes days! My heart just aches for the people whose lives have been dramatically impacted and the wildlife that has been killed or endangered. The last video I saw showed dead sea turtles washing up on shore. It made me sick.

  33. i've already commented on the spill on your previous post, so you know how i feel. today i cried in the car listening to a wildlife expert on npr talk about the devastion of the marine life. he was talking about the cleaning of birds when a caller asked about cleaning and saving dolphins and whales. he stated that they weren't finding any alive, so there wasn't a way to save them. my heart broke all over again.

  51. Hey! Thanks for looking at my vacation post. LOVE AL's beaches. :)
The oil spill is a tragedy. The people to blame are those who were in charge of inspecting these rigs.
Our President could do a lot more to expedite and clean this mess up, that's for sure!
However, I am terribly sorry that so many have had to cancel their vacations. There is so much to do on the beach despite getting in the ocean.
    Everyone is in my prayers.

    Thanks for hosting the party.
I can't get the gulf out of my mind - it is so upsetting to see the beautiful gulf waters and wildlife have to go through this catastrophe. I have been thinking about all those who live in the region and how it is effecting their lives. I hope BP and our governemnt can get it stopped soon, so we can at least know what the extent is of the damage and clean up needed. I am praying that with time we can look back at this as a time that changed the course of history in how we deal with off shore drilling.

  63. I've always prided myself as a pirate of today. You see, I was born into this world with salt water in my veins. The sea calls to me, no matter how far away I am. From as early as I can remember, I can recall vividly family vacations to the beach (we live just a few hours from the shore). Fishing from the gulf waters, watching hurricane's come ashore, collecting shells as tiny treasures from the sea....a reminder of it's beauty.
Then one day, my dream came true. I moved to the beach. I lived only a few blocks away. The slat was heavy in the air, the coastal breezes. It was home. I got a job that only deepend my love and passion for the coast, in sea animal rehabilitation at Mote Marine Labatory. There I literally held formerly beached porpoise above water so they wouldn't drown. I assisted in feeding and administering medications to sustain it's life and finally-relaese back into the waters in which it came.
We marked sea turtle nest on the shoreline, so that people would be cautious and we put chicken wire over them so that raccons wouldn't tamper with them. A love of the sea and it's inhabitants-all of them-it deepend.
Today, while my husbands career took me further inland, I live close enough to come down at least every 3-4 months. It's my second home. I spend much time here. I do alot of writing here. Books and music that I am working on. It's the perfect place to find inspiration.
I find it in the surrounds: the ocean's song, the mounds of the sea oats protecting the waters, the gulls laughter, the pelican's smile, the business of the sand crabs as they shuffle across the shoreline.
But I also find my inspiration in the people of the coast. Sure they live the ideal life, but they are also some of the hardest workers. They work for their living and they are dependant of those city folks who give in to the lure of the ocean and pay to spend their hard earned money long the Gulf of Mexico. They are those that haul the best seating for the best views in the form of lounge chairs to sunbathers, the fisherman and shrimpers who provide the night's fresh catch, the rentals who share their homes and condo's to those who want to adpot that life for a week, there are so many who contribute the coast that much more appealing.
This entire oil fiasco.....is just that. I am angered, I am sad, I am frustated at the amount of greed and the lack of measures that were taken, even though there were numerous signs prior to the spill that there was a problem. Those signs were ignnored, because of greed. Our nations gem (it has the whitest beaches than anywhere in the world) is now literally tarnished. It's inhabitants are being killed. There are the concerns of dead zones where no sea life will ever be able to survive. All this, at what cost?
This is my backyard. I want my children and my children's children to see, know, experience and appreciate what I have all my life. I want them to know it's beauty. I want them to understand how plentiful it is in all it gives, but I also want them to understand how fragile it is. We have to care for it. We have to treat it with love. LOVE.
Now it's time for each of us who have ever put our toes in it's sand to do SOMETHING. There are numerous ways: donate time in clean up, visit the restaurants and stay in the condos. Or donate money to the cause. And pray. We need much prayer. I do not think people quite understand the severity of the situation. It's bad.

It's up to us. Each of us. To give back to the place so many of us long to be.

    Our Ocean. Save it.

  64. I'm a new follower #657 (!) and would love a subscription to this gorgeous magazine.

  78. Linda, Thank you for the kind words on my blog! I am now your newest follower!
I actually grew up spending my summers at Gulf Shores. My family had a house at Bear Point. It sickens me to know that my kids most likely won't have the same chance to spend their summers carefree in the Gulf. Gulf Shores had long been a fixture in our family. My brother was a chef at Mango's on the Island and before that at the resort on Alabama Point. I am not only sad about the loss of the beaches, but also so many whose livelihoods are tied to this beautiful place!

  81. Hi Linda, the BP gulf oil disaster is just that!
I hope the off-shore drilling will not be permitted in the future. I am a Floridian and the beaches are so important to us as well. I am going to the Gulf beaches on the fourth for my vacation! Can't wait. Right now they are clear of any spill. BP needs to really get this under control and clean up all the mess they created.
Prayers for all those who are dealing with this issue.
By the way, I am a follower, and will mention you in my post this week end.

I guess living in a state that depends on oil revenue to keep us solvent (La) I have a slightly different was of viewing things. However, this so closely mirrors the blowout that happened off the coast of Mexico in 1979 it's uncanny. You would think in 31 years the technology would have progressed beyond trying the sames things that didn't work in '79 and don't work now. Glad to see such recent pretty pictures of the beach.

PS. Hubby and son can't fish right now because of all the oil in the La. marshes.

  90. Being a fellow southerner I am just sick over this oil spill, I don't think it will ever be the same. I don't think BP, the federal gov. or the state gov. has done enough to help.
